PRE-SCHOOL  provides a time of ‘Learning through Experience’, therefore everything we do in this phase is classified as learning. Love and affection are given here in many forms and limitless amounts. We believe that our children are the most important part of our school and their days here are planned around individual needs for growth – emotionally, physically, socially, intellectually and spiritually.

In our JUNIOR PREPARATORY phase emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic skills in numeracy and literacy.  Teaching methods become more formal and children experience a noticeable division in classroom timetables.  This requires self-discipline and organisational skills which are taught.  The atmosphere is friendly, quiet and stimulating and a climate of nurturing is very evident in our school.

In the SENIOR PREPARATORY phase we have been careful to weave into our curriculum the strengths of traditional and proven teaching methods to ensure the perpetuation of high standards along with the positive aspects of OBE.  In so doing so, we remain committed to preparing our learners to work towards meeting the challenges of nation building and the needs of our country.

In the JUNIOR COLLEGE we bring together the Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners in a logical peer group.   This facilitates a dynamic learner-centred environment focussing on experiential learning that captures the vigour and enthusiasm of the adolescent.  Learners are encouraged to develop not only their academic potential, but also, sporting, cultural, social responsibility and leadership qualities.  Learning opportunities in a specialist environment ensure that learners gain not only the knowledge, skills and values relevant to their community and country, but also the necessary skills and academic rigour to move with confidence into the final phase of schooling.

In the SENIOR COLLEGE we seek to promote the academic development of learners and also their personal development.  At the end of Grade 12 learners write the Independent Examination Board’s senior certificate exam.  High academic standards and wide involvement in the co-curricular programme reflect our belief in the idea of education in the broadest sense.  We also believe that we must prepare our learners for the modern world.  It is vital, also, to give them knowledge and understanding of the ‘real’ world, and important choices that will determine their career values and lifestyle as adults.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME
Co-Curricular Programme
The Co-Curricular Programme offers a wide variety of both cultural and sporting activities.  We aim for all learners to have a healthy and rewarding experience of the programme.  We try to give as many learners as possible the honour of representing their school.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES:
The Sports Department at Cornwall Hill College follows the Long Term Athlete Development Programme (LTAD) as proposed by Dr. Istvan Balyi. The core principles of this programme are LIFELONG PARTICIPATION, IMPROVED PERFORMANCE and PHYSICAL LITERACY. We have, in response to the sedentary life style of our constituents, implemented a Mass Participation sports policy. We hope through this mechanism to achieve the core principles of the LTAD programme.

We have recently adopted the YOUTH FITNESS & WELLNESS CHARTER. This charter provides the basis and ground rules for all our sports participation.

We offer the following formal sports programmes: Cricket, Rugby, Football, Swimming, Hockey, Tennis, Equestrian, Athletics, Netball, Softball, and Cross Country. There is professional coaching available in Cricket, Swimming, Tennis, Golf and Netball. All these activities take place on campus. We continue to produce provincial and national athletes in various school- based and external sports.

Boarding Residence
2007 saw the opening of a 64-bed boy’s hostel. The main aim of this hostel is to   bolster current sporting numbers. The hostel routine will be geared towards accommodating the special schedules required by high-performance athletes.

Sport as a Subject
We implemented a pilot project at the beginning of 2006, in offering cricket as a subject of choice for grade 8’s and 9’s. This has proven to be a very popular choice amongst the boys and even some girls. Cricket follows a full curriculum including aspects of cricket such as biomechanics, the history of the game, the Laws, coaching, officiating and scoring. There is a strong practical component.

Outdoor pursuits are offered through our clubs and societies.  Also offered is a small group for outdoor adventures.

We are proud of our school and the school is proud of its learners – it is they that make this College such a special place to be.
