In January 2003 Cornwall Hill College embarked on the introduction of a bold new educational innovation.

The transfer of the Grade 7 learners of the College into their logical place as secondary learners has many advantages:

  • It brings learners in Grades 7, 8 and 9 into a peer group unit that encourages leadership, achievement and maximised learning opportunities in a supportive, specialised environment.
  • It provides learners with a specially selected group of teachers that relate to their life, their world, their stage of development and their needs.
  • The curriculum is designed to be more experimental, experiential and participative than learners in the Senior College (Grades 10, 11 and 12) whose focus is more specifically academic.
  • Learners are, however, able to benefit from a more age-advanced approach to content, skills, time management and application to their learning<

Eight learning areas are studied until learners make their subject choices for the Senior Certificate Examination. Careful individual guidance is given at this stage (end of Grade 9), by subject teachers and the Guidance/Life Skills Department. Career orientation evenings are held with representatives from tertiary institutions.

The Junior College phase is completed at the end of Grade 9 with the recognition of the General Education and Training Certificate.
