Teaching methods in this phase become more formal and children experience a noticeable division in classroom timetables, requiring self-discipline and organisational skills, which are taught. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic skills in numeracy and literacy. Once in the formal learning situation a learner requires sound integrated perceptual skills – both auditory and visual in order to learn to read and spell.
Days are busy and purposeful, with the atmosphere friendly, quiet and stimulating. Throughout each school day the children’s work is praised and constant effort is made to acknowledge and reinforce self-image. Great importance is attached to the development of the children’s interest and knowledge of his environment. Topic work, field trips and cultural visits are made every term to museums and theatres. Many extra mural activities take place in the early afternoon. Art, choir, instrumental music, chess and all the main sports are catered for. All children are encouraged to participate and are praised for involvement and effort. Acknowledgement of our Christian ethos is consistently made and biblical stories and truths are taught in every class. Children participate very fully in assemblies and prayers Positive reinforcement for each little child is the core of our teaching ethos. |
